Introduction

Entering into dialogue with an interested public and engaging in conversation about questions of the times is one of the important concerns of the memorial Bautzner Straße Dresden.

To promote this dialogue, we have been taking our exhibition projects into Dresden's city centre since 2019. In exhibition containers in front of the Kulturpalast, we asked the people of Dresden and tourists about their biographical experiences and opinions.

In 2019, the focus was on the mural “The Path of the Red Flag”. It represents a failed image of history based on historical materialism that was an expression of socialist optimism about the future. If today we consider this communist conception of society to have failed, we ask what social values are important to us today and what expectations we have of the future.

In 2020, 30 years after German unification, we looked at everyday experiences in East and West Germany before 1990 and with the challenges of the time of upheaval. What dreams were associated with the Peaceful Revolution and what - perhaps also failed - hopes shaped the years after the system change?

Even after the projects have been completed, we remain curious and invite all visitors to this homepage to participate in the discussion by filling out a questionnaire. We would like to thank all those who take the time to fill in the questionnaire with a free ticket to visit the Bautzner Straße Memorial.
